Overview

This unique itinerary provides an insider's visit to the famous Hamlin Addis Ababa fistula hospital and the country that Dr's Catherine and Reg Hamlin called home for more than half a century.

We begin our journey in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, with three days to explore the city and visit Hamlin's Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, Desta Mender - Hamlin's Rehabilitation and Reintegration Centre and the Hamlin College of Midwives. We then fly south to Jinka, the gateway to the Omo Valley and once a crossroad for droves of people migrating through Ethiopia. Today, it is undoubtedly one of the most unique places on earth given the sheer diversity of tribal groups living in this remote area of the Great Rift Valley. This is an extraordinary opportunity to immerse in the fabric of some of these societies, including the Ari, Mursi, Konso and Karo tribes, each with their distinct culture.

Continue to Yirgalem where you will visit Hamlin's regional fistula hospital and a Hamlin-supported midwifery college.

This trip will not only have a profound effect on your life but also the lives of so many Ethiopian women.

Note: The itinerary is subject to change.

Challenge Grade

This morning, we travel from Jinka into Mago National Park, a remote and wildlife-rich area that is also home to some of the Omo Valley’s most iconic tribal communities. Our destination is a visit with the Mursi people, renowned for their distinctive cultural traditions. Mursi women are known for wearing large wooden or clay lip plates, inserted into the lower lip and earlobes — a powerful symbol of beauty, identity, and social status within their community. Following our visit, we continue by road to Turmi, the heartland of the Hamar tribe, one of the largest ethnic groups in the Omo Valley. The Hamar are semi-nomadic and engage in cultivating millet, vegetables, cotton, and tobacco, as well as raising cattle and goats. They are recognised for their stunning craftsmanship in pottery and their highly expressive cultural attire. Men often style their hair in elaborate clay buns adorned with ostrich feathers — a mark of honour typically worn for months after a successful hunt — while women wear beautifully layered beaded necklaces, iron arm coils, and adorn themselves with cowry shells. We arrive in Turmi in the late afternoon and settle in for a relaxed evening, surrounded by the rich culture and natural beauty of the Omo Valley. Total drive: approx. 130 km (about 3 hours on gravel road by 4WD) Emerald Lodge (Turmi)

We depart Turmi early and begin our journey north towards Arba Minch, travelling through diverse landscapes and tribal regions. Along the way, we stop to visit the Konso people, a UNESCO-recognised community known for their terraced agriculture, intricate stonework, and waga sculptures — carved wooden grave markers that honour clan heroes. A guided walk through a traditional Konso village offers fascinating insight into their social structure, customs, and sustainable farming practices. After our visit, we continue the drive to Arba Minch, located between the twin lakes of Chamo and Abaya. We arrive by late afternoon and settle in for the evening, with time to relax and take in the views. Approximate driving time: 8-9 hours including stops (Konso village and scenic viewpoints along the Rift Valley and Omo Valley) Paradise Lodge (Arba Minch)

Case Study

Your fundraising of $4,000 or more will go a long way in Ethiopia. Every dollar raised goes directly to Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia and directly helps women in need. Your support can fund life-changing surgery for multiple women, ending their suffering, restoring their dignity, and giving them a second chance to live to their full potential.

Your fundraising may also help fund a midwifery scholarship at the Hamlin College of Midwives, training a student who will return to her village to ensure women in her community can give birth safely.

By fundraising, you will change the lives of many in Ethiopia — restoring dignity to women, returning mothers to their families, and helping to prevent the devastating effects of obstetric fistula. This life-changing work creates a ripple effect through entire communities, improving lives far beyond the hospital walls.

In Ethiopia, obstetric fistula is the common outcome of prolonged, obstructed labour that causes permanent internal damage and incontinence. Many patients become social outcasts and their suffering is life-long if untreated. Patients at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital or one of its regional hospitals are treated free of charge.
