Indigenous Community Volunteers Larapinta Trek with DLA Piper

In August 2016 ten women from law firm DLA Piper set off on a 6-day Corporate Challenge along the Larapinta Trail and raised over $40,000 for Indigenous Community Volunteers (ICV).

DLA Piper is a long-time partner of ICV and was looking for a way to involve their staff more in ICV’s work – the Larapinta Trail with Huma Charity Challenge was a perfect fit.

"DLA Piper had a fantastic experience with Huma Charity Challenge – we sent a team of 10 to Alice Springs to walk the Larapinta Trail in August 2016 in support of both our diversity strategy and our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The trip offered a unique opportunity for a group of women across our five Australian offices to get to know one another and forge stronger relationships and networks, while also increasing their cultural awareness and competency in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We had brilliant guides hiking with us on the Trail, and everyone learnt a great deal from local Arrernte cultural educator Deanella Mack against a backdrop of truly spectacular scenery. It really was an amazing experience and the feedback was nothing but positive from all involved. We would happily recommend Huma and this Larapinta trip to other organisations."

With a desire to increase their cultural knowledge of Indigenous Australians, the women were accompanied by ICV staff member Nina Tsernjavski and Deanella Mack, who has a cultural awareness business which ICV assisted in getting off the ground some years ago.

Dee (below left) has become a great champion for ICV and gave the group a real insight into Arrernte culture, from both traditional and contemporary perspectives. She led the group on a guided walk through Standley Chasm and joined them around the campfire to give insights into one of the oldest living cultures in the world.

The DLA Piper group also had a great opportunity to learn more about ICV and see first-hand the strength of their relationships with communities and the positive impact of projects they engage in.
